Instead of usual condolences, wanted to share a memory of JCD. In the mid-2010s, as a newly minted No Agenda Baronet in my mid-twenties, I emailed John because I was convinced I wanted a career in tech journalism and wanted advice on how to break into the industry. Rather than ignore my email, which would be understandable given how many emails he must have been receiving, he replied. In fact, he gave me his number and took the time to talk with me. When I called, his advice was simple. Don't do it. He said I'd struggle to make a living or find stable work. Soon afterward, many major tech blogs, podcasts and publications folded or downsized and he turned out to be absolutely right. That honest advice helped change the course of my life and led me down a different path, one that ultimately brought me a beautiful life and a beautiful wife. He may have helped saved me from years of hardship and I've never forgotten his kindness or honesty. Rest in peace John JCD. Now you can taste wine, cook chili and deconstruct the media and complain about terrible writing all day long. Down here, we'll miss you Buzzkill.
